Outdoor Lighting Landscaping

Bright outdoor lighting lighting up walkway of landscaped backyard at night

Your backyard, garden, or lawn may look great during the day, but does it look great at night? If not, it’s probably something to do with the outdoor lighting.

At night, the aesthetic of your landscape rests upon the shoulders of your outdoor lighting, which can make or break a landscape’s aesthetic.

The brightness, color, height, and direction of your outdoor lights all combine to decide your landscape’s aesthetic.

Here at
Boise Landscaping Company, our team of outdoor lighting landscaping experts specializes in designing and installing custom outdoor lighting systems that bring out the full potential of your landscape.

Of course, we make sure it aligns with your personal style and needs too. Whether you need a cozy string of lights along the walkway or a hearty bunch of colorful lights around your fence, we’ll work with you to ensure you’re satisfied with the final result.

Here are the myriad of different lighting options that we offer.

Pathway lighting: Among the various different types of lighting, pathway lighting is arguably the most important. Pathway lighting illuminates the most important part of your garden - the paths. And without the paths, no one can get anywhere.

If you're looking to install your own pathway lights, some simple rules to go by are to point them downward and to position them roughly 6-8 ft apart, depending on the brightness of the lights you're using.

And it goes without saying that you'll want to get lights that match and complement your style and aesthetics. Rather than merely lighting up the way, outdoor lighting should enhance your existing aesthetics, so that your outdoor setting is even more stunning than it is in the day.

Outdoor lighting also has the effect of discouraging potential intruders by sending the signal that someone is at home.

Step lights: If you thought falling on flat paths was painful, wait till you fall on the steps. Step lights, while not the most prominent feature in a backyard, are very essential for preventing dangerous falls.

If you're worried about step lights ruining the beauty of your outdoor setting, fret not. They can be installed in various places to not look out of place. For example, they can be installed on the risers, the corners, and on the side walls.

The important thing is that they need to point downwards so as not to shine into anyone’s eyes, and the wiring you use must be suitable for outdoors and waterproof so as not to be damaged by rain.

Bollard lights:
Bollard lights are lights that look like little pillars and are usually cylinder shaped, resembling candles in the ground. If you know what I'm referring to, you'll know that bollard lights are extremely robust, literally like stone pillars. You'd probably break your leg if you tried to kick them.

Given their hardiness, even extreme temperatures and weather will hardly affect bollard lights, making them perfect for outdoor usage.

What's really cool though, is that due to their size, they can be fitted with motion sensors and even security cameras. You might want to take that into consideration next time you're deciding on your lighting option.

Spotlights:
Spotlights serve to highlight the nicer features in your outdoor space, such as sculptures, or to light up specific targeted areas.

One of my favorite ways to use spotlights is by making them motion-activated, so that when visitors walk past my majestic waterfall, it lights up out of nowhere, and it never fails to draw reactions of awe.

Spotlights can be great for security too, because as mentioned earlier, they are also often used to target darker areas, to light up dark spots that intruders can enter from.

Floodlights:
Floodlights are the lights you see at soccer stadiums that are extremely bright and can light up a large area at once.

There’s not much to explain about floodlights. They’re used to illuminate a large part of your outdoor setting so that you have one large light instead of many smaller lights.

Post lights: Post lights resemble street lights, and look like a little lantern or cube mounted on top of a very long pole. They are very sturdy as they are normally made from metals like aluminum and stainless steel.

The lighting feature at the top of the pole, as well as the pole, can also be customized to anything you want. As such, post lights can fit in any backyard or garden.

Wall lights:
Wall lights are usually quite hard to get wrong because simply having a light on the wall looks great already. Wall lights are commonly seen not just outdoors, but indoors too, usually at the entrance, because they create a very welcoming vibe.

And just like with post lights, wall lights can take on a variety of shapes and designs to suit any backyard.

String lights:
String lights are a popular lighting option, as they can create quite a fun, lively ambience. As such, they’re best used to light up the zones in your backyard that you use to host visitors and parties or events.

String lights can be hung onto your other structures, or can even wrap around trees. The important thing is to make sure they are fastened securely. The last thing you want is for your guests to have a string of bulbs falling onto their heads and faces.

Besides the mentioned lights mentioned above, we also offer underwater lights, which can make any water feature look like it’s come out of a fairytale, as well as automatic lights that only light up from dusk to dawn.

We also offer smart lighting options for ease of control and efficiency.

This list of lighting options is by no means exhaustive, and if you’ve got something in mind that isn’t there, don’t be shy about asking us. Chances are, we can get our hands on it even if we don’t usually offer that type of lighting.
